End of life is the term that Microsoft uses to signal they will no longer support an operating system. In this case, it’s Windows 7. Microsoft announced as of Jan. 14, 2020, they will no longer support or provide security patches for the OS. This means if bugs or security holes develop in the OS, Microsoft will not fix the problem.
Does this affect my computers security?
As of Jan. 14, 2020, all support will be stopped for Windows 7. This means no more updates and no more security patches and no more help from Microsoft if a vulnerability occurs. It is very likely, with the number of PCs and laptops still using Windows 7 hackers will work to find ways to exploit the OS when the end of life date arrives.
Are there users still using Windows 7?
There are millions of people still using Windows 7 and yes, you can continue to use it. However, we highly recommend upgrading. Over time you will see security issues arise which puts you at a higher attack risk and third-party companies will stop supporting their applications in Windows 7.
How do I upgrade to Windows 10?
Upgrading to Windows 10 is something Tech Rehab can help you do. As long as your machine meets the specs required to run the OS it shouldn’t be difficult to get you upgraded. Below are the minimum specs needed to run Win 10.
- Processor: 1GHz processor or faster
- Memory: 1GB of RAM for a 32-bit installation and 2GB of RAM for a 64-bit installation
- Hard Disk Space: Up to 20GB of space
- Graphics Card: A screen with a resolution of 800 by 600 or higher, and a DirectX 9 graphics chip
- Connectivity: Internet access
