With today’s technology, there is a good chance that you have saved a significant portion of your life on your computer. Whether it’s photos of family and friends, letters, financial statements and records, or something else, many people no longer keep physical documents.

In a sense, this is a great step forward. Having the ability to save all these documents electronically means less clutter and confusion for most people. It’s easy to organize your financial records with a few clicks of your mouse, and you can save almost innumerable photos without worrying about losing them.

But what do you do if your computer crashes? Would you lose everything forever? Fortunately, the answer is no. Here is what you need to know.

The Way Computers Store Information

A computer stores information on a piece of hardware called a “hard drive.” The hard drive is a spinning disk inside the computer itself. All of your photos, documents, and so on are saved on the hard drive by an encoding process.

When your hard drive fails, or your computer crashes for some reason, sometimes the computer might “forget” how to access all your information. But that does not mean that your information is gone! Assuming that you used a good data backup system, it should be an easy matter to access a copy of your information.

In the event of a disaster, a skilled technician can still access your hard drive. This may mean removing the hard drive from the computer, or it might be feasible to do it while the hard drive is still installed. In either event, you should not attempt to recover the data yourself. Some people, in attempting to recover data that has been lost, have accidentally damaged the hard drive even further. In some cases, this could mean that you actually do end up losing everything.

Of course, if you are using a data backup system such as Carbonite, then your files will be saved on the Internet. This way, even if your computer is irreparably damaged, you can still access copies of everything you had.

Backing Up Your Data

It’s not enough to backup your data on a separate hard drive or a CD. If disaster strikes your home, you could lose everything, including your backups.

Rather, consider online data backup program. As Resellers of Carbonite, Tech Rehab can create a solution for you that protects your data and makes it simple to access even in a worst case scenario.
