Since people have been getting online, there have always been issues with getting a computer virus. What’s more, as time goes by, viruses become more and more sophisticated, making them more difficult to prevent and detect.

Fortunately, there are a number of antivirus programs available today. As with purchasing a car, each antivirus has essentially the same function, but there is a wide variety of different bells and whistles.

Deciding which antivirus program you should use to protect yourself really depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for ease and simplicity of use, you might use one program. On the other hand, if you are looking for layered protection against multiple threat vectors, you might use a different one. Here are some of the more popular antivirus programs available today.

AVG

AVG offers a fairly good free antivirus. The basic program will periodically scan your computer and isolate any viruses it detects. This isolation is referred to as a “quarantine” and it prevents the virus from spreading throughout the system.

AVG also has the ability to scan links on the Internet. A link is a block of text that you click to take you to a webpage. Some virus creators will put up links on the Internet; then, when someone clicks on the link, a virus is downloaded onto their computer. AVG attempts to prevent this by scanning links and notifying users if a particular link is deemed to be unsafe.

AVG also offers an online shield option. This shield acts to prevent you from accidentally downloading an infected file.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender used to only protect against software called “spyware.” However, recent versions include an antivirus program with features similar to AVG. Because it is a newer antivirus program, some users might find it to be a bit more basic, but many people are very happy with it.

BitDefender

BitDefender offers both a free and paid version of its antivirus software. Not only does it protect against viruses, it also protects against software called “ransomware.” Ransomware is software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge, which then locks down your computer and demands that you pay a ransom before you can access the information.

BitDefender is also excellent in the protection it offers against viruses. Overall, many professionals prefer it to the other options on the market.
